What exactly is Steam Punk? According to Luke, the Steam Punk event sponsor from England, “Steam Punk can be easily explained as a literature, art and design movement with a retro taste to it. It’s a 19th century science fiction world view inside a creation which does not actually exist.” Originally, Steam Punk referred to alternate-history science fiction which along with Cyberpunk was popular in overseas novels during the 80s and 90s. After that, with Steam Punk fashion gaining attention from around 2006 in Europe and America, the full-scale Steam Punk event entitled [STEAM GARDEN] finally came to Japan in April of this year. In the Japanese animation and video game world, a Steam Park type of world view had already been painted in works such as the movie [Castle in the Sky] (1986) or the video game [Final Fantasy VI] (1994) from before. However, Steam Punk as a fashion has yet to develop. In the future, there is a good chance that Steam Punk will join together with Gothic & Lolita as well as Kawaii culture and gradually spread.
