1930’s and 70’s revival item; Plaid
Plaid gained popularity among young girls at the Tokyo Girls Collection this time. Out of all of those plaids, especially “Glen Plaid” stands out in the crowd.
“Glen Plaid” is a woolen fabric with a woven twill design of small and large checks, and usually made of black, grey, and white, or with more muted colors. Two dark and two light stripes alternate with four dark and four light stripes, both vertically and horizontally, forming a crossing pattern of irregular checks. Also, Edward VII loved Glen Plaid, so people have also started calling it “The Prince of Wales Check” and because of that, it was known for a formal pattern.
In this year, there are full ranges of colors, not only made of muted colors, but blue and yellow, so it can be more casual and pop. It matches with sporty jackets such as embroidered sati baseball jacket and MA-I. I think a fusion of classic style and casual street style can be seen a lot this Autumn.
Colorful Thick Vertical Stripes
“Stripes” is also gaining popularity, not as much as plaid but pretty much people were wearing stripped clothes. As you might know, stripes have slimming effect, so especially it is good for woman.
So when you see the streets, you might notice stripes are thicker than last year, and more colorful, like blue, pink and, orange. I suppose colorful striped items will become mainstream this year.
“Making your outfit looks more advanced”
“Velour” has been popular as a trend since last year, and that stream is still going on. Not only clothes, but fashion items also started using this velour fabric.
It has matched with classical outfit until today, but this Autumn is a little bit different from usual. It matches with big silhouette items such as flare skirts and wide pants. I am pretty sure that velour fabric will be used for bags and accessories and will become more popular.
Except what I have mentioned above, there are many items which are made of shiny materials. Cold season is just around the corner but I want to keep my eyes on vivid colors, not on muted colors.
