The area around Okachimachi used to be a large entertainment district from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s with a great number of restaurants and booths thriving. From the mid 1920s, Okachimachi Station was built bringing in more military stores and shops with imported variety goods. After that, there was an increase in stores such as sporting goods stores, stores specializing in sneakers, and secondhand clothing stores. The trend of high-tech sneakers and secondhand clothing from the late 80s to the 90s in URA-HARA brought groups of these types of shops here all at once. Presently, there are many shops which offer items such as leather, denim, and army fashions with a focus on well-established shops. You can even see people wearing these rough and mature styles on the streets. Recently, it seems that there are more young people here due to the opening of the Tokyo Sky Tree. But this does not change Okachimachi’s basis of prominent styles which cleverly merge leather, denim, and military items.
