In the "URA-HARA" area, between Meiji St. and Aoyama St. in Harajuku, there are hundreds of unique and original clothes shops, which display sophisticated urban, ethnic, folklore and girlie taste.
"URA-HARA style", the casual fashion provided by the shops, is ambiguous but features a clean casual taste, a fusion of modes and used clothes.
"Salon-Kei" style represents a sophisticated urban taste of "URA-HARA style" and originally comes from male fashion. In the beginning of 2000, when "charisma hairdressers" were booming, the word "Salon-kei" (Salon- Tribe) was born. In those days charisma hairdressers were both talented and fashionable and became icons of the time. Many of them opened their hair salons around the Harajuku area. Naturally, clean and fashionably styled people inspired by hairdressers' fashion, were named "Salon-Kei".
In 2002, when "CHOKi CHOKi" magazine was first issued, "Salon-Kei" were featured, creating the trends of narrow ties, clean layered look styles, flaunted belt buckles and long cardigans. It also influenced "Onie-kei (gorgeous and wild men's fashion)" and is still alive today. "Salon-Kei" always seems to adopt the latest trends and advances in fashion.
Staff of "ACQUA", a leading hair salon in Harajuku throughout the charisma hairdressing boom are fashionable and represent "Salon-kei". While they develop as hairdressers, they absorb the latest fashion news through magazines and form opinions and suggestions together. They will assume the role of fashion icons in Salon-kei.
